The Retro trend is back for 2013

Celebrate a time past with reclaimed and up cycled home wares that offer character and charm.

Vintage chic is a popular look for the home and works particularly well in personal spaces such as the bedroom; decorating with timeless classics such as vintage glass bottles, pretty trinkets and old personal photographs creates relaxing and beautifully romantic spaces.

The combination of old and new can be used to striking effect; whether it be vintage nick knacks or larger feature items such as reclaimed floors and restored original cast iron radiators, blending old products into modern day settings creates interesting and stylish interiors.

The team at The Old Radiator Company offer original cast iron radiators that are restored back to their former glory; supplied fully tested, these old gems can be plumbed straight into modern day heating systems.

Create a talking point with a vintage floor; TheVintage Floor Tile Company offers gorgeous reclaimed quarry, encaustic and cement tiles that were often found in churches and are steeped in history.

Up-cycling is not only eco-friendly but can be cost effective too; giving something old new life with a lick of paint or wax for example  not only restores hidden beauties, but often costs much less than buying something new. This popular trend adds character and a personal touch to any home.

With the increase in demand for vintage style and retro home wares many companies offer new products that are made to look as if they were born in a different era.

Thomas Crapper & Co design and manufacture Victorian sanitaryware. Unlike most ‘reproduction’ bathroom products, historical accuracy has been maintained with no changes to design, other than very small alterations that allow connection to modern plumbing.

As well as contemporary bedsteads, The Original Bedstead Company offer many traditionally styled bedsteads in various materials and finishes. With their own range of custom linens, customers can complete the look with a choice of 15 designs and 250 colour options for the embroidery.

Vintage chic isn't the only was to celebrate the past, we don’t have to revisit times far gone to enjoy and appreciate a touch of retro design. The ever fashionable 70’s trend has resurfaced with vengeance bringing bolder, quirkier and more colourful designs than ever.

Iconic Interiors offer exceptional furniture designs including seating, furniture and lighting. Make a design statement with one of Iconic Interiors new retro sideboards. These colourful designs will bring life into any contemporary room with their bright alternative designs.

Trend Setting Metallics

Celebrate summer in style with trend setting glamorous home accessories and furnishings, finished in shimmering materials such as copper, brass, steal and mirror sure to bring a room to life.

The use of metallics in the home can be as bold or as prudent as you choose, that’s the wonder of the shimmer it catches your eye at any size; from statement furniture pieces to striking accessories, the choice is endless.
Accessories are a great way in incorporating metallics into a room without being to dominant. This minimal look is easy and effortless but can add something special to a room. Shimu has a fantastic range of metallic accessories that are small and subtle.

If subtlety isn't your thing make a statement with a feature radiator; Carron have a beautiful selection of traditional cast iron radiators, why not choose a hand burnished finish to fit the metallic trend.

The Old Radiator Company offer original cast iron radiators that have been lovingly restored, many of their designs are given that popular metallic finish.

Dramatic feature pieces also include dominant mirrors, perfectly complemented with ornate metallic frames. The French Furniture Company offer a wonderful selection of majestic mirrors finished in silver and gold leaf, that are sure to make a statement in any room.

Metallics can be used in any room of the house, why not opt for a metallic dining table or bedroom furniture? Metallic finishes spruce up any room or furniture, they can be used to add a contemporary finish to a traditional piece; bringing a timeless design into the present.

The Original Bedstead Company offer a variety of timeless designs finished in an array of textures and colours; take their antique nickel finish, as pictured below, for a hint of the metallic trend applied to classic design.

Or, for something more theatrical you could go for a predominantly metallic room. The French FurnitureCompany offer a star quality range of bedroom furnishings all with a metallic twist. We love the Regence collection pictured below, the twinkly silver finish is beautifully complemented with the use of gold dupion silk; very luxurious.

Metallics are versatile, they make for an interesting finish in the garden as well as the home. The use of metallics in the garden allow for sunlight to be captured and reflected brightening up even the dullest of days.  Metallics can be used in garden features and sculptures as well as furniture, but why not combine the two with an artistic piece from Chris Bose Contemporary Furniture. Chris Bose Contemporary Furniture specialise in metallic finishes, their artistic creations are bold and unique just take a look at the impressive Surf Bench and iconic Tango statue.

Tribal Trend 2013

Symbolism is huge this Spring/Summer and what better way to use this trend than through tribal pattern.
Tribes for centuries have used symbols, patterns and colour as a form of communication and expression, which is similar within interior design. Symbolism can be expressed in a variety of ways be it design, fabrics, products… no product is too big or small.
A prime example of a subtle use of tribal designs is the Tango lamp by Chris Bose Contemporary Furniture. The use of additional sculpted art to the lamp stand brings out the tribal essence of the design.
Animals have always been a main factor in tribal life so what better way to show this than through the essence of design. A great way to incorporate such a pattern could be through carpet.
Blenheim Carpets have a great print range or a why not try a unique piece of furniture within a room like The Odd Chair Company’s Ottoman.

A great way to incorporate tribal is within art, imagery and now heating. The Glass Radiator Company do a alternative take on heating and do a fantastic tribal artwork on a glass radiator.
Tribal can be as obvious or as faint as you make it be it quirky patterns, prints or design but this is a trend that will help you make a symbolic statement within your home.
Also tribal is hitting the catwalk be it accessories or clothing. Shimu has taken this fashion statement and created their own tribal interpretation in accessories.

007: How to get the Bond Lifestyle

The recent release of the latest James Bond film, Skyfall, is sure to spark a new trend; gentleman’s club style. 007 may have become a style icon for the man of today creating the desire to want a Bond lifestyle.

The majority of males have watched the film, absorbing themselves into the world of Bond, and we are sure that many would like to be him; and why wouldn’t they want his toned physique, action adventures, amazing cars, beautiful women…need we go on.

Obviously, the normal man to Bond transaction is not easy; intensive gym sessions and mind blowing brain exercises are hard, even for a trained agent. But the average male can enjoy their own piece of the Bond luxury lifestyle, with little effort and from the comfort of their own home, by surrounding themselves with all things Bond. We think that these gentleman’s club style products are a great place to start.

Bonds treasures will be safe in these storage boxes by Shimu

007 would be very at home on the latest Chesterfield collection of sofas by Iconic Interiors; we can imagine him now, sat on these classy sofas in his swarve suit sipping a Martini (shaken not stirred of course)….

But he’s going to need somewhere to store those Martini bottles and glasses, The French Furniture Company have just the thing in a manly dark wood…

Now any man can follow Bond lifestyle trend without putting their life on the line and who knows this image may just draw the ladies in.

Although Winter is meant to be over soon, news is spreading of a white January with the streets turning into a Winter Wonderland.

So with  the prospect of a cold few weeks ahead of us, we would like  to leave you with this poem to keep your thoughts on the fact the colour and warmth of Spring is just round the corner,

THE SEASON OF SPRING
the season of spring
weather seems to sing
lovely lovely days
are coming our ways

the season of spring
blooming blossoming
of nature of all kind
let roots unbind

the season of spring
birds unfold their wings
diving high into sky
wish one could fly

the season of spring
careful hearts love sting
reaching out towards others
some persons might bother

the season of spring
nice sound bells ring
new wave new style
faces have on a smile

the season of spring
an new awakening
busy humanity on earth
as if it’s a new birth

listen listen to my words
the season of spring is near
now a look into your lovely eyes
and one can see spring is already here

Merry Christmas to all and to all a good night!

The nights are dark, the weather is cold but here at Atom we are warmer than ever. Our festive spirits have been high and why shouldn't they be, we have had a thrilling year with positive developments and exciting new clients. Therefore a well deserved pat on the back was needed in the form of a festive celebration at Bill’s restaurant in Cambridge. After a delightful afternoon of scrummy food, multiple tipples of wine and excessive laughter we decided more wine was needed. This then wonderfully resulted in our MD swigging Champagne and folk dancing in the street with, we must say, an outstanding violinist. Christmas truly is a time for ‘Everyone dancing merrily, in the new old-fashioned way’.

Before we sign off  with our Christmas wishes we must let you know of the Christmas sales from our wonderful clients; The PoshShed Company- who create finely designed bespoke sheds, The French Furniture Company- whose elegant and distinctive pieces truly are a find, and last but not least Shimu- specialists in reproduction and antique oriental furniture and accessories. Further details of the sales can be found on the clients' websites.

To round up our festive blog we would like to say, whatever your festive plans entail, whether it's being at home with loved ones or having a special get away …

So from everyone here at Atom

Roger's taking the plunge!

So this weekend saw some amazing efforts around the country to raise money for Sport Relief. So many people got involved for this amazing charity which helps people living incredibly tough lives, both at home in the UK and across the world's poorest countries. It goes a long way too. From transforming the lives of people in the UK’s most disadvantaged communities, or those living with poor mental or physical health, to protecting street children and providing life-saving healthcare abroad.

The Sport Relief Mile was a huge success and saw more than a million people get involved bringing the current fundraising total to £52,070,587. Celebrities got involved on mass with various challenges for example, Freddie Flintoff's challenge to beat 12 world records within 12 hours which he smashed and actually beat 14 world records! These included fastest time to high-five 20 people blindfolded (in 6.53 seconds); Most people popping party poppers (420); Most peas eaten with a cocktail stick in 30 seconds (38); Most kisses in 30 seconds (40).

Our local celeb, Roger Illsley, loves getting involved with these good causes (we all saw the moustache) and this time is no different. Unfortunately he missed the chance to take part in the Sport Relief Mile but is gearing himself up for the Big Splash Mile which is pretty much the same idea... Just in water. As they say, 'Missed out on the mile? Take the plunge now!' Now's your chance to get involved, with charities like this a little really does go a long way so loosen those purse strings and sponsor Roger for his Big Splash Mile here

In the spirit of charitable giving Griffin Glasshouses have been selected by The National Garden Scheme (NGS) to offer an exclusive new collection of free standing glasshouses. This collection represents excellent value for money, features beautiful design and the NGS receives 5% of the proceeds from the sale of every glasshouse in this collection. Included are 5 designs which can be personalised with a range of accessories and made in any colour. To find out more about the NGS visit their website here.

Go Get ‘em Tiger

London Zoo is hosting an event tonight to raise money for Tiger SOS. Some very brave (or very stupid…) people, including Daisy’s zookeeper sister, Grace, will be taking on the challenge of walking over hot coals, all in aid of a great cause. Tiger SOS is a campaign to raise money for ZSL’s tiger conservation work in Sumatra as well as developing a new Conservation Headquarters right in the heart of central London.

The tiger is desperately endangered throughout its range and its future is in our hands. Over the last decade the wild tiger population has been decimated, with a massive 95% drop in numbers. ZSL’s aims are to raise £4 million to save the Sumatran tiger. Plans include developing a state-of-the art Tiger Conservation Headquarters in the centre of London at ZSL London Zoo. Its purpose is to inspire support and a lifeline of funds for their tiger conservation work in Indonesia and other key tiger ranges.
A huge amount of money has already been raised, but further efforts and support are still needed. Tonight’s fire-walking event will see participants attending a 'Nothing is impossible' seminar, where they will learn to face their fears and attempt to walk over burning hot coals in the London Zoo grounds… if, like me, you have a more ‘rather them than me’ attitude towards putting bare flesh to hot embers, don’t fear, you can still play your part in support by putting your hands in your pockets and donating to this worthy cause. Daisy’s sister’s just giving page can be found here. At time of publishing Grace has already raised £360.00, keep it coming!

Spectators are welcome on the night, with gates opening at 5:30pm. More information can be found about the event, and the Tiger SOS campaign here.

A Great British Knees Up

This year is a pretty special year for Britain, with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in June just a month before the opening of the London Olympics in July. The tube will be rammed, the streets will be busy and taxi’s will be extortionately priced but regardless of all this, what a fantastic summer it will be. Everywhere will buzz with the confusion of lost tourists, the excitement of sports fans and/or royalists. On top of all of this there will be an immense feeling of unity, not only within our own community but throughout the entire world.

It’s a time to really show off what talent Britain has to offer, I think Adele managed to kick start this on Sunday evening at the Grammy Awards by winning 6 awards and irrefutably giving one of the most moving yet infallible performances of the night, just weeks after throat surgery.

It’s not only music that the British can be proud of; we should also take note of the great designers that to this day are still recognised as pioneers in their industry. Namely the great Thomas Crapper, whose designs are still kept alive and known as the world’s most authentic period style sanitaryware. Another is H&E Smith known for their traditional techniques, coupled with an inherently skilled work force, these expertise is what lead to their presence within a vast re-furbishment programme by the London Underground.

And a little on the business side… Just two days ago the CBI (Confederation of British Industry) issued a positive * forecast with growth in UK manufacturing and professional services having been encouraging in recent months. Their report forecasts that as well as increased business investments, net trade will continue to provide the most positive contributions to growth with UK exports expected to increase by 4.3 per cent in 2012 and 6.4 per cent in 2013.

The British love a good knees-up and I imagine this summer will just be one big party rolling into the next.

For a further read on this subject the Editor of Elle Decoration, Michelle Ogundehin, explores some fascinating views on her blog.
